Here are a few tips for avoiding the flu and other seasonal colds from the Village at Proprietors Green, a retirement community near Boston, MA. You can ask for the high dose injection, which is recommended for seniors aged 65 or older, and the intradermal vaccine, which uses a smaller, more concentrated needle. As the New Year begins, everyone is setting their New Year’s Resolutions. Have a difficult time sticking to your resolution by week two? You are not alone. Here are a few tips for sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions throughout the year from Village at Proprietors Green, a senior living community near Boston. Share your best resolution keeping tips with us on Facebook!
- Be specific. If your resolution is to be more fit in the New Year, then be specific about how you would like to achieve that goal and set a specific workout schedule or routine for yourself. At the Village at Proprietors Green, residents can work with the professional trainers in the Fitness Center to develop a personalized fitness program for them.
- Set reasonable goals. You are more likely to keep your New Year’s Resolution if you break it up into attainable goals. If you want to reduce your caffeine intake, try cutting back by one cup a day for a week until you reach your goal. If you want to stick to a new workout schedule, try setting a goal of a 20 minute workout 2 days a week and build on your schedule as you meet your goals.
- Track your success. Use a whiteboard to help you track your new exercise schedule or diet. You can also use a day planner or other means to track your progress and success. If you see your goal in writing and your progress in action, you are more likely to stick to your original resolution plans.
- Stay positive. Don’t use negative language to talk yourself out of your resolution or to punish yourself for not sticking to your goals. Only give yourself positive praise. Keep your attitude positive and reward yourself as you achieve each of your goals. A good attitude goes a long way to helping you keep your resolutions.
- Be accountable. Find a friend to help you stick to your new goals or routine. A resolution buddy will help keep you accountable and motivate you to stick to your new goals and New Year’s Resolutions.

Village at Proprietors Green, an independent and assisted living retirement community near Boston, MA, has a specially designed Memory Care Program at its Allerton House for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory related disorders. This special program maintains the highest level of care and support for residents. Here are a few tips from Village at Proprietors Green for families and supportive care givers to help seniors restore their memories with nostalgia. Share your best nostalgia moments with us on Facebook!
1. Watch old movies. Classic movies like Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, etc. can help seniors remember moments from their past. Maybe someone they knew met one of the stars or they met an old flame at one of the movies. Some seniors remember certain songs or scenes from the movies. Make the experience interactive. Encourage seniors to sing along or recite the lines they know. After the movie, invite story sharing moments. Ask open ended questions listen to the responses. You might be surprised by what each senior has to share.
2. Listen to music. Like old movies, music has the ability to bring people together. Sometimes you can create a musical moment by listening to old songs or even genres, like jazz. Usually people can remember what they were doing when certain songs were played for the first time or when something significant happened. Encourage seniors to talk about the songs they liked or things that happened in their life. Encouraging social interactions really helps to trigger memories.
3. Rekindle a love of hobbies. Try activities with seniors that they enjoyed before Alzheimer’s disease. Painting, gardening, playing piano, crafting, etc. can all trigger memories. Staying active and interactive will help build the link to memories. Making each activity social and interactive will make all the difference.
